Big week of deadlines and new projects. Sketchbook Project is due (1 orignial drawing- which includes something we have done in class; 1 free draw that must show effort; 1 page of art history which would result in 2- 2D images and 2- 3D images from any of the following period of history- Ancient Near East, ancient Egypt, Ancient Agean, or Ancient Greece; and a half page statement about art to include what you feel you have discovered/learned in visual arts class thus far.

Silhouette Drawings

Draw a silhouette of each of the following botanicals and animals. This will build your visual vocabulary. Shape is everything, be mindful of the shape in your work, it assist the viewer in connecting to your artistic style and allows you to communicate non-verbally with anyone who views it. Simply go to Google Image and search for silhouette of _________________. Draw your favorite in each category. Shape really is everything in conveying your message clearly, rendering the need for words in your art unnecessary.

Week January 14-18, 2013

We learned to draw upside down and in the manner of Michangelo (Sistine Chapel style). We discovered how to get in the right brian zone by doing things from a different perspective. Drew the hand several times in different ways. Blind contour was attempted. Song Drawings were critiqued in open forumn and students shared constructive criticism for each others work. Week ended with an early release due to snow.

Week January 7-11, 2013

Day 3- Here is what we did in class today:

Texture rubbings project- 30 rubbings in colored pencil, circled favorite texture

Vacbualry project handed out- Helpful Hint: Artlex.com website will make doing this project easier- this project is ongoing, will also be for students to do on their own, although we will define many of the words during class as we go. Midterm exam will feature many of these words and concepts.

Defined texture, line and value; hatching, cross hatching, contour hatching, cross contour hatching

Demonstrated foreground, midground and background- shared the thumbnail sketches that they created with peers and described it.

Title: Moulin Rouge               Artist: Henri de Toulouse Lautrec

Handouts: Pen and ink packet & vocabulary words

Projects handed out:

Day 2-

We learned about the 5 perceptional drawing skills. Open/closed; organic/goemetric; objective/non objective compositions. We drew a still life using the perceptional drawing skills. Skinny legged table with taco bowl, smock and paint bottle.

FALL SEMESTER 2012 BEGINS

As we begin our time together in art this semester I want to introduce you to the new arts cirriculum. North Carolina has completely revised and recreated the way in which art is delivered to students on all levels of the arts experience. Although I am not entirely certain how all these changes will be accepted, I can assure you as a student or as a parent that these chaanges will not limit what we can do together in the classroom in developing the artist within. It is my belief that every learner, no matter the age, has much to contribute and much to absorb from the world around them. A persons attitude toward learning and their willingness to share with others will ultimately determine their enjoyment in life. I will share with the students the interesting perspectives I have gained from being a son, a brother, a father, a person will historical ties to this area, a farmer, a business person, an arts student, a recreation industry student, a fundraiser, a mentor, a christian, a neighbor, a husband, a scout leader and a fellow Cardinal. We build together a relationship within these classes that makes the class more of an extended family than just another class. We work hard, but we also enjoy great rewards for our labor. Join me in class for Beginning Art, bring with you the person you want to be and together we will find solutions to all kinds of exciting challenges.

Your Name Project: Your Name Project Overview- Beginning Art.doc

Here is a description for parents of the name project written for an onlookers perspective.

I take my classes through the following routines for the name project:

1)      Pre-drawing exercise: Builds visual reference, or visual vocabulary. Shape is everything, no focus on interior details only shape.

We draw 40 silhouettes of animals and 40 more of botanicals: Example: (Google image search silhouette animals; http://www.google.com/search?num=10&hl=en&site=imghp&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=1254&bih=577&q=animals&oq=animals&gs_l=img.3..0l10.2573.3649.0.4039.7.6.0.1.1.0.109.499.5j1.6.0...0.0...1ac.1.-gBTWofukgQ#hl=en&safe=active&tbo=d&site=imghp&tbm=isch&spell=1&q=silhouette+animals&sa=X&ei=4OSkUL6YGYe-8AT4hoDACQ&ved=0CEMQBSgA&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&fp=672e159d564727a4&bpcl=38625945&biw=1254&bih=577

2)      Pre-drawing exercise: Lettering design, how to create your own lettering, font style or just crazy letters. Again shape is everything in readability of the words. They must be large enough, they have to be read clearly from 10 feet away without squinting or the need of definition. Example: Google image search: Try crazy lettering, animal lettering, flower lettering, and if you are brave try (Graffiti Creator website) here is the search for just Lettering; http://www.google.com/search?num=10&hl=en&site=imghp&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=1254&bih=577&q=animals&oq=animals&gs_l=img.3..0l10.2573.3649.0.4039.7.6.0.1.1.0.109.499.5j1.6.0...0.0...1ac.1.-gBTWofukgQ#hl=en&safe=active&tbo=d&site=imghp&tbm=isch&sa=1&q=lettering&oq=lettering&gs_l=img.3..0l10.273134.275692.3.275879.10.6.0.3.3.0.172.734.2j4.6.0...0.0...1c.1.qjNmqcSmJk8&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&fp=672e159d564727a4&bpcl=38625945&biw=1254&bih=577

3)      We also study depth. Overlapping objects as to create foreground, mid-ground and background in a work. I make them find 3 objects that they can trace, then they have to decide which one is to be closest to the viewer and trace that first. They can even color it in. Then the trace the next object as the mid ground area and color (or texture rub) such that this object is seen as behind the first. We then move on to a third, or even fourth object, continuing to color each. We also then use a texture rubbing to fill in the negative space (behind and around all the other objects (positive space) that they just created. These normally turn out to be decent works. I also require that each of the three/four objects be done in varied intensity. One light, one medium dark, one that is clearly the darkest, perhaps one that varies the value scale from light to dark. This teaches them how hard to bear down their colored pencil to achieve the correct effect. I also ask that they erase any graphite pencil lines used to trace the object so that all that is left is pure color work. The fact that they must erase the pencil lines they used helps them to draw more lightly, so that their work has a higher craftsmanship quality and fewer pentimento lines – those shown where they had to erase, commonly accepted as mistakes.

4)      I require that they create thumbnail sketches. Small scale works about the size of 4 postage stamps maybe 2”x 3” etc… probably 5 to 8 per page and develop ideas. They will choose one or two of these and color them in. Colored pencils work the best. Blending this media is a vital learning process. Also intensity and value scale are vital here in their development. I try to boost this process away from the normal line drawings of an elementary level student to a more thought out work that shows planning and technique. We work on vivid color use, how contrast is important, complimentary color schemes and best color choices for creating mood in artwork. Students quickly warm to this approach because they see from these small scale works what will and won’t work without wasting huge sheets of paper and loads of time. I encourage them that the doodles they create in the margins of notebooks are the artwork pre-drawing of their imagination. Doodling is a thumbnail sketch without direction, it is pure art because it is for the sake of art and the pleasure of the drawer, not for profit, esteem, or extrinsic value.

5)      I teach a good deal about the texture of how something feels, or looks like it feels. We do texture rubbings. Take loose leaf notebook paper (even with lines- I hate lined paper) but this paper is cheap and thin, and put it over tough surfaces and take a colored pencil and rub it. These rubbings are really cool, and I require that they rub no less than 40 objects, surfaces etc… I find that speakers on a radio or TV are really good, the vent holes on lockers and air conditioning vents have rich patterns,  old wooden boards show great grain lines, and the reverse side of door mats normally have ridges, bumps that create pattern etc… This also teaches them to look for things in new ways that may be useful in creating background or used to fill up spaces that seem in need. Some neat texture rubbings can also be found at the graveyard (never done this with my students) but grave markers or building dedication markers normally have engraved lettering or bas relief works that yield some successful rubbing efforts. Door signs like for bathrooms etc… often have this texture.

6)      We then move toward a final idea. I ask that they draw their name using a unique font that they create using botanicals and animals. It must show depth, a range of color use that varies in intensity and value and the work must engage the viewer from 10 feet. All the working must be readable and it should be a work that shows planning and detail especially in the areas of shape, color and depth.

I also allow them to Google some ideas if they are having troubles. Here is a good one: http://www.google.com/search?num=10&hl=en&site=imghp&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=1254&bih=577&q=animals&oq=animals&gs_l=img.3..0l10.2573.3649.0.4039.7.6.0.1.1.0.109.499.5j1.6.0...0.0...1ac.1.-gBTWofukgQ#hl=en&safe=active&tbo=d&site=imghp&tbm=isch&sa=1&q=name+art&oq=name+art&gs_l=img.3...818186.818981.24.819090.8.2.0.0.0.0.109.109.0j1.1.0...0.0...1c.1.fRlccfEeybY&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&fp=672e159d564727a4&bpcl=38625945&biw=1254&bih=577

I hope this helps you. This project is an entry level beginning art project. The works are created by students who are in their first semester of art often having little background. Many of them are successful, largely because of the rigor of the process and the variables that they use to master it. I hope you and your family enjoy this as it is very achievable at home. For really little kids, I’d suggest taking crayons and allow them to make marks, many marks, then when the many marks are made, try cutting those papers in the shape of a letter, or animals (flowers) to create a letter. Paste these onto colored paper for a more vivid presentation. It might be really cool to vary the crayon color for different letters etc… Have fun with it. I find also it helps to go buy a frame that you feel will suit the size area you want and then work to fill it. I have mat board here in my class, I have a mat cutter too, so if you would like a window mat to put around the work contact me and I will cut you a mat and send it to you, but you will probably need to buy the frame first.

I am currently working with kids to create some paper cut work, not sure of your little ones are up for it, but snowflakes mounted on black paper are really nice. Take a look at this idea: http://www.google.com/search?num=10&hl=en&site=imghp&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=1254&bih=577&q=animals&oq=animals&gs_l=img.3..0l10.2573.3649.0.4039.7.6.0.1.1.0.109.499.5j1.6.0...0.0...1ac.1.-gBTWofukgQ#hl=en&safe=active&tbo=d&site=imghp&tbm=isch&sa=1&q=paper+cutting+art&oq=paper+cut&gs_l=img.1.2.0l10.774164.775739.26.779528.9.8.0.0.0.0.141.796.4j4.8.0...0.0...1c.1.xprYV7hvD50&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&fp=672e159d564727a4&bpcl=38625945&biw=1254&bih=577

A Brief Overview of Baroque Art

"Doubting Thomas" by Caravaggio

History

Baroque Art first appeared in Italy and later moved throughout the rest of Europe. It was primarily associated with the religious tensions between Roman Catholicism and Protestantism. In response to the Protestant Reformation the Catholic Church started the Counter-Reformation, which commissioned art that was as appealing and doctrine-oriented as possible to draw the masses to the church.

Colonization during this time period led to many exotic locales and models being used and the rise of the sciences eventually led to many paintings of landscaped devoid of human figures.

Characteristics

Baroque images are characterized by the dramatic lighting of figures against a darkened background. Unlike the traditional interpretation of religious figures, Baroque figures are often realistically presented and the models for pieces were often pulled right off the streets. This type of art delighted in content that gave a sense of energy, of tension and movement.  Ecstasy, especially religious ecstasy, was what a Baroque artist strived to portray. Baroque art was highly detailed, with an incredibly convincing rendering of the textures of cloth, skin, and wood grains.

Notable Works and Artists of Baroque Style

"The Conversion of St. Paul" by Caravaggio

"The Last Judgement of Christ" by Michelangelo

"Adoration of the Shepherds" by Nicolas Poussin

"The Night Watch" by Rembrandt

"St. George and the Dragon" by Peter Paul Rubens

"Las Meninas" by Diego Velazquez

"Girl With a Pearl Earring" by Johannes Vermeer

WEEKS November 7- November 18
Our class will make a paper quilt. The use of quilts is a very histrocial one. Our class will focus on North Carolina as a topic. We will construct an alphabet quilt in which each student will be asked to draw a scene about North Carolina using a certain letter of the alphabet. Below is a project overview, plus an A-Z ideas planner, as well as a chart to show which student has which letter. It is one of the more fun activities that helps bond each to another, just the way the old quilters would have done things only they used cloth.

Saint Valentine

Saint Valentine was a catholic priest who got caught marrying people, so the story goes. He was thrown into jail and tried to show the Roman emperor Claudius II the ways of the Lord. In response he had his head chopped off on February 14th in 269 AD. He’s considered a martyr.

He is the Patron Saint of affianced couples, bee keepers, engaged couples, epilepsy, fainting, greetings, happy marriages, love, lovers, plague, travelers, and young people. He is often pictured with birds and roses.

WEEK February 7-11

We start our first real art project this week. It is a fun project designed around a series of studies in commercial art. Designing a CD case. Students will examine the need to use design elements while designing a small project. Most students are comfortable with small works, as they have doodles and small drawings in notebooks and on margins of papers in virtually every school subject. The true challenge of this is to control the space and communicate a definate message that appeals to an audience. The song selection is totally up to the students and the option ot burn their own CD is certainly available, but by no means required. During this project I will allow students to bring in their own ipods and other music in order to listen to their own music. Once this project ends, so does that perk.

Fall Semester 2010 ENDS

WEEK December 12-20

More clay projects and much fun to be had in Art class this week. As we lead into the holiday time away, it is now that proper care for our clay objects becomes very important. We have begun the process of air drying our first two projects, the rattle and the mug. Most students are in the process of drying these projects properly by sitting them on the window sills. These will be ready to fire on the week we return in January. Most are currently nearing the bone dry stage this week, so we should be safe to fire. Our week will end with a clay test. Students are reminded to use the clay study guide and look carefully at the vocabulary list posted in the art room, which has been there for 3 weeks!

WEEK November 21- December 9 - Clay Unit

As time will permit with the coming holiday season we will begin and work toward clay projects. Our time will focus on the creation of projects that teach the three methods of hand build ceramics, pinch, slab and coil. Students will learn the proper handling techniques of clay and will include: storage, clean up, kiln firing and engage in the principals of texture, shape, form and line within ceramic arts. It is MY personal favoirte medium and it is here that we will conclude our study in Art 1 this semester.

Clay Projects from December 1- 17, 2010 We will set these projects out to dry over the Christmas Holiday Break.

WEEK November 1-19

Our time together will be invested in drawing, coloring and shading facial body parts. Eyes, ears, nose and mouth drawings will be featured through in class examples and real life efforts. Our classes will have at least one opportunity to draw from real life people. A handout featuring how to's of each part will be handed out in class and used often for good examples.

WEEK October 25-29

We continue to explore the world of music. Students are allowed for my class ONLY to bring Ipods and music devices (at their own risk) and listen to them while drawing. This project is one of the most long lasting, as students have an option to download and burn their own usable CD. We will play their favorite song in class when they present their work for this commercial art unit of study.

WEEK August 30- Sept 3, 2010

Our second week of school is off to a good start. Students learned to draw in some non-conventional ways last week with the use of blind contour and the 5 perceptual drawing skills as outlined by Betty Edwards. A still life was established for Art 1 students to get more in tune with the use of these perception skills. We have drawn hands, a stool and basket, the corner of the room and one class had homework to draw their hand holding an object. This week in Art we will delve into the aesthetic qualities of a work of art and discover more of what art is as we strive to answer these two questions: "If the answer is Art; then what is the question? What is the difference between to look and to see?"

WEEK August 24-27, 2010

Welcome Art 1 Students to the Visual Arts Department. My name is Travis Gentry and it is quite an honor to return to my home school to teach you art. This week will focus us on the rules, procedures and working environment of the Art Room. We will focus on getting to know one another better and how the projects will preceed for the semester. The Art Department has a contract between the three of us, you, your parents and myself that must be completed and returned. I also have a supplies list of items you will need for this class. The cirriculum has a 50 word vocabulary which will be tested from time to time throughout the semester and a weekly project.

WEEK November 30 - December 4

We are creating from our imagination this week. The project revolves around a locker. Each student must create a locker by folding a large 18x24 paper to look like a locker door. On the inside they must use the shock technique of surrealist artist Rene Margitte to surprise the viewer about what is inside the locker.

Below are some of Margitte's work (circa 1935-1938) to gain inspiration. The locker project is due Thursday with a critique. Friday will be a normal sketchbook grading day. Each student is reminded that they need a 1 gallon sized ziplock storage bag by Friday, we will start a unit on 3D clay forms next week and the bag will be used each day for storage.
